This project features a detailed 3D model of a tap measure, designed in Blender. The primary focus was to practice sculpting complex shapes and apply an outline feature to enhance the model’s presentation. The project demonstrates with artistic elements such as outlining, refining both technical and creative aspects of 3D modeling. 

Objective

The objective was twofold: to model a realistic tape measure with all its mechanical details and to practice sculpting the object’s shape and adding an outline feature for a stylized look. This approach allowed me to experiment with creating functional, realistic models while incorporating visual enhancements that emphasize the form.

Key Feature

  • Precision Modeling: Modeled each part of the tape measure, from the casing to the tape blade and locking mechanism, focusing on realistic proportions and accurate geometry.
  • Sculpting Practice: Used Blender’s sculpting tools to refine the shape, ensuring the object’s surfaces were smooth and natural while maintaining the rigidity typical of a manufactured product.
  • Outline Feature: Applied an outline (or edge) shader to the model, giving it a stylized, clean look that highlights the object’s form and structure. This was done to explore visual techniques that enhance presentation in both wireframe and solid modes.
  • Hard-Surface Techniques: Incorporated hard-surface modeling techniques to create sharp, well-defined edges, ensuring the tape measure’s mechanical parts were precise and functional.

Challenges Overcome

The challenge in this project was balancing the precision required for modeling mechanical details with the fluidity of sculpting. I also explored the use of outline shaders, which provided a unique way to present the object, making it stand out with enhanced visual clarity.

Outcome

The final model is a detailed and stylized representation of a tape measure, combining realistic hard-surface modeling with artistic touches such as the outline feature. This project allowed me to experiment with new techniques while reinforcing my skills in both mechanical modeling and sculpting.
